CHINA would step up construction of major projects related to energy conservation and environmental protection next year, the Politburo meeting agreed Friday.
The meeting pledged to deal actively with climate change by implementing measures to cut carbon intensity, the Xinhua news agency reported.
The meeting came a day after China announced it was aiming to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced for each yuan of national income by 40 percent to 45 percent by 2020 compared with 2005 levels.
China unveiled an unprecedented four-trillion-yuan (US$586 billion) stimulus package a year ago at the height of the global crisis.
The economy has rebounded strongly, growing 8.9 percent in the third quarter from 7.9 percent in the second and 6.1 percent in the first three months of the year, the slowest pace in more than a decade.
But the country is under pressure to rebalance its economy by reducing its reliance on exports and investment as the main drivers of growth and by boosting domestic demand.
Premier Wen Jiabao has consistently lamented the lop-sided, unsustainable nature of growth, which is driven by investment, heavy industry and exports.
China is striving to pass the baton of growth to domestically oriented sectors of the economy, including services, which consume fewer resources and do less damage to the environment.
