It can provide extremely precise rotational rate information.Because of its intrinsic reliability, FOG are used for high performance space applications, aircraft and missle applications.
FOG usually consisits of fiber and LiNbO3 waveguide. As a very high tech product, for a long time, China can only buy this product from USA or Russia. Because of its wide application in defence industry, Chinese engineers have spend decades to develope this product. An old researcher from a state-hold research institute once told me he had worked on this project more than 20 years. Besides some research institutes with defence industry background, some Universities also have their team on this product. Zhejiang University, BeiJing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics and Haerbin Industry University are the best of them. Although the performance of their FOG sitll can not compare the best performance of FOG from foreign competitors, they are still proud to have their own FOG products.
Today, there is a news about FOG manufacturing in China. In Baoji city, Shanxi Province, west of Xi'an city, a local state-hold aeronautics factory just announced to build their first FOG production line. The factory has cooperated with Zhejiang University since year 2004. This product line is the fruit of that cooperation. It is said the production line will have a capacity to build more than 1500 FOGs each year. From any point of view, this is a milestone achivement for Chinese FOG industry.
