Big Leading manufacturers, such as JDSU, Oclaro, have moved their production lines to here in recent years. It seems obviously that almost all production lines for low-level passive optical device are concentrated in Mainland China. And such move makes competition intensified. It was a big news that OZ Optics Inc. from Canada, which enjoys a high reputation in this field, established a production base in Beijng in August this year. Why on earth did OZ choose this opportunity to come to China? And how will they confront the current competition in optical device market? Miss Lee Yuebin, director of Beijing Branch, OZ Optics Inc. talked about their Chinese Marketing Planning with us in a recent interview. CEOL: Why did OZ choose this opportunity to come to China? Lee: China, as a potential big market, catches our attention all the time. Even in the circumstance of the global financial meltdown, China has succeeded in maintaining a relatively stable growth. Both the current large-scale construction of high-speed broadband network in China and more supports from Chinese government give us more confidence that Chinese market enjoys a bright prospect in the future. Why did we choose this opportunity to come to china? On one hand, we would like to grasp the market opportunity here. On the other hand, we hope that, by making use of our years of experience in technique and know-hows, with the advantage of low-cost, high-quality raw materials in China, not only our products become more and more competitive, but also we can serve China’s domestic market better. CEOL: How to confront the current serious competition in optical device market? What is the advantage of OZ? Lee: Competition for passive optical device is serious indeed in china, but we are very confident to face the challenge. And our confidences come from years of experience in technique, workmanship, quality control and equipment investment. OZ’s advantages are as follows: Firstly, our products are so diversified that we can make full use of passive optical device production lines. Our products have been widely used in different fields, such as telecommunications, medical, industry, military, aerospace, petrochemical and scientific research. Secondly, most of our products are high-end products. For example, the polarization-preserving and high-power devices are much more profitable than others. Furthermore China’s domestic market scale in this field is comparatively small today. The stability and the reliability of most products have not been internationally recognized. On the contrary, since found in 1985, OZ has accumulated lots of experience about R&D and production. In 1988, OZ involved in the field of polarization-preserving, and then became the first company that introduced polarization-preserving devices into market. OZ has been keeping a close cooperation with the leading companies of the world. There is no doubt that OZ takes the leading position in the world in terms of performance, quality and depth of product line. More importantly we can provide customers tailored products as well as complete solutions according to their specific specification. Thirdly, strong brand effect and vast sales network. CEOL: High-power product is the current popular investment spot in the field of optical device. As leader in terms of technique, what’s your view about the market? And how about the progress you have made? Lee: High-power market can not be ignored definitely. Optical devices have been widely used in many fields recently. Though China’s domestic high-power products market has a late start, it develops rapidly and the achievement is amazing. Chinese domestic companies are keen on the R&D of fiber laser, and some companies even have the ability of mass production. OZ itself has advantages and experience in the production of high-power patch cord and high-power transmission system. In recent years, we have made a large investment in resources and been keeping a close cooperation with famous manufacturers. We have developed related high-power products, such as high power isolator. It not only can handle consistently the high power up to 50w, but also can achieve high isolation and low insertion loss. Many customers give a high praise to this product. What’s next is that we’ll optimize our product series to further meet customers’ requests and promote an integration solution. CEOL: China’s domestic fiber-to-the-home market makes a start on a large scale. Are there any products to seize this opportunity for you? Lee: In terms of FTTH and next-generation optical networks, we will focus on testing instrument. We combined wireless technology with distance optical fiber fault locator which can make a real-time inspection to optical networks. If there is something wrong or will be, it will alarm timely and locate the fault point correctly. Then the stability and the reliability of the network are strengthened and the cost of operation and maintenance is reduced dramatically. Our high-end product, distributed Brillion sensor, can make a high-precision and high- resolution real-time inspection to long-distance large networks. Such product can inspect a distance up to 100km, provides resolution up to 0.1m, then give a more precise optical inspection. AT&T has used our products to inspect the existing networks since the last year. It is found that their network performance is better than their expectation with this product. And it can be used at least for another 5 years. Such equipment can help operators make a large reduction on cost of networks. We hope that, by cooperating with excellent system integration companies and combining our testing equipment with communication system, we can provide operators with more precise next-generation network inspection.
