[advertise]广告[/advertise]12/29/2009, What is the most sensational telecom news of China in year 2009? You may say that is the launch of 3G service. But Mr. Zhang Chunjiang’s scandal must be a bigger hit to the industry.
Mr. Zhang, Chunjiang is China Mobile’s vice chairman and executive director. China Mobile announced on Dec.27 that Mr. Zhang is under corruption investigation by government. Rainie Lei, a spoken man of China Mobile said Zhang seriously violated discipline of China Mobile. In China, these kinds of words have the same meaning as corruption scandal. Rainie Lei didn’t confirm if Zhang has left China Mobile. He only said that investigation of Zhang won’t affect operation of China Mobile.
It is still not clear the detailed reason that Zhang is investigated. According to a communication website in China, Zhang’s trouble comes from the merge of China Unicom and China Netcom. As former China Netcom’s CEO, it is said that he increased profit of China Netcom by improper methods. After the merge, new China Unicom found big loss from former China Netcom. Zhang was investigated just because of this.
There is also another version to explain. Local medias reported that Zhang involved into inside trading of a new public company Ultra@power who is the sole provider for China Mobile’s Feiton IM service. Ultra@power’s stock in Shenzhen Market stopped one day on Dec.28 for this reason. Ultra@power has announced they have nothing with Zhang Chunjiang’s investigation.
Ultra@power went to public in Shenzhen on Oct.30 this year. On the first day, its stock price went high to 147 RMB. Since day one, many analysts doubt that there is inside trading for this company. Ultra@power’s business mainly depends on China Mobile, and its feton IM service once has to sign contract with China Mobile each year. Just because of this, they failed to go public in Hongkong in year 2002. But this time they finally succeeded. Zhang’s investigation may also relate with Ultra@power’s amazing success.
Zhang was once considered as the future chairman of China Mobile. With this scandal which is the biggest in past 30 years in China’s telecom industry, Zhang’s future in China Mobile dimmed.
