The sophomore, a woman identified as Duan, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Science and Technology Beijing, allegedly claimed to have killed another girl from her class, who could not be identified, in a hotel in Haidian District at about 2 a.m. She went to the police at around 7 a.m., according to Chinese-language newspapers yesterday.
Duan is now in police custody. The motive for the murder is still unknown.
Classmates of the two said that they were close. “They always had dinner together and went out together in the university, like good friends. We can’t think of any reason for the killing,” one classmate said.
The university announced the incident on the Web site, but provided no further information. University officials were on hand at the university Saturday to learn more about the case and provide psychological counseling to students.
