Li Yizhong, minister of industry and information technology, said on the sidelines of the annual session of the country’s top legislature in Beijing that the maximum subsidy for such vehicles could reach 60,000 yuan (US$8,800). “We are discussing details with the Finance Ministry,” Li said. “The planned subsidy would be quite high.” The Central Government launched a pilot program last year to offer a one-off subsidy for buying hybrid, electric and fuel-cell vehicles in 13 cities, including Shenzhen. The program was carried out in the public transportation, taxi, postal and urban sanitary sectors. Local governments are required to allocate funds for the creation and maintenance of related facilities. The subsidy varies according to the prices of “clean-technology” vehicles and those powered by traditional fuel. Under the program, a hybrid car that can cut fuel consumption by 40 percent or more can get a one-off subsidy of 50,000 yuan, and a city bus that is more than 10 meters long and can save 100 percent on fuel can be subsidized by as much as 500,000 yuan.
