November 23,2010, On today's ODC2010(Optical communication developing forum) in Beijing, Mr. Wei,leping, former CTO of China Telecom and current vice director of science&technology committe of China Telecom, gave a keynote speech. In his presentation, Wei talked about his opinions about China's broadband development.
According to Wei, "The fiber advancing, the copper backing" policy has been carried out for many years, but it is still far less than finished." He gave an example. China Telecom has nearly 500 million pair Km in southern China, but only 45million Km optical fiber. China Telecom still has 84million ADSL subscribers, only 20million FTTx subscribers.
Wei said that cost of FTTx is still higher than DSL in China Telecom, which is about 180 RMB to 210 RMB per subscriber now. Cost of active equipments is about 49% of the total cost, passive equipment is 23.8% and installation is 27.2%. By the end of 2010, China Telecom will have 1 million new FTTH customers. By the year 2014, China Telecom will have 4 million new FTTH customers, the FTTH network covers 40 million customers.
According to Wei, China Telecom still face 4 difficulties in developing FTTH. They are policy, market, cost and application. China has become the only important country in the world that does not have a national broadband strategy. It is still very difficult for China Telecom to develop video business, especially HDTV and 3DTV market.
In the speech, Wei pointed out that the total traffic of China Telecom is 12.7T in year 2010, and it will be 118T in year 2014. The current 40G backbone network can not support this rapid development of traffic. By year 2012, 100G network will have wider development in China.
