December 26,2010, Reported by ChinaDaily, China's top legislature Saturday approved the Cabinet nomination of Miao Wei as the new minister of industry and information technology (MIIT).

The National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee voted to approve the nomination at the end of a six-day bimonthly meeting.

Miao, 55, replaced Li Yizhong, 65.Miao used to serve as Party chief of Wuhan city, capital of central Hubei province, and general manager of Dongfeng Motor Corporation, China's third largest state-run automobile company.
He was appointed vice-minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in 2008. 16 days ago, he was appointed as the leader of communist party organization inside MIIT. This was explained by local media that he would soon replace Li Yizhong.

Miao's appointment is a good sign for China's triple play and FTTH development. Although China introduced triple play policy early this year, there is nearly no real advancement because telecom service providers and SARFT can not find a solution that can satisfy both of them. As former Wuhan city mayor, Miao has more experience on triple play and FTTH than Li yizhong. Wuhan, the so called optical vally of China, has strong fiber optics industry. The city also announced its FTTH plan first in mainland China. When Wuhan's FTTH deployment began in year 2006, Miao showed great interest on this. He once visited all related equipment providers, also the first FTTH trial project in YOFC. He pointed out at that time, "Wuhan's FTTH development must base on win-win policy, base on effective resource integration."

About Miao's appointment, many veterans in Wuhan's fiber optics industry told us that they are very optismatic towards Miao. When Miao was Wuhan's mayor, he cared about Wuhan's FTTH development very much. In his new position, he must play a better role.
