President Donald Trump has appointed 45-year-old Brendan Carr, a Republican commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), as the next FCC chairman. Trump praised Carr as a champion of free speech, emphasizing that he will end the regulatory assault on America's job creators and innovators and ensure that the FCC delivers for rural America. In response, Carr tweeted at X that we must dismantle the monopolists' coalition of censorship and restore the free speech rights of ordinary Americans. He also said he wants to end the promotion of the FCC's Diversity and Equality Inclusion policy, DEI. His policy preferences also include agreeing to cut regulation and penalize politically biased stations.

Carr has been with the FCC since 2012 and was first nominated for a seat in 2017. It's no surprise that he's the new chairman of the FCC, and his advocacy has been consistently in line with Trump's idea of dissatisfaction with traditional institutions.

Carr is also a well-known critic of big tech companies. Earlier this month, he publicly criticized the central role that companies like Facebook, Google, Apple and Microsoft play in the censorship coalition. He accused these big companies of censorship, rating mechanisms and a tendency towards unilateral narratives. He asked the four companies to quickly clarify their relationship with NewsGuard, an AI fake news detection company founded in 2018.

On the other hand, the U.S. Department of Commerce's $42 billion broadband infrastructure plan and the National Spectrum Strategy released by the Biden administration also came under strong attack from Carr. He harshly criticized the FCC for refusing to finalize a nearly $900 million broadband subsidy given to SpaceX's Starlink.

The FCC is the creator and regulator of communications policy in the U.S., so the FCC chairman's influence on the global communications industry, and the tech industry as a whole, cannot be underestimated. From the media's portrayal of him, on the one hand, his policy advocacy of repressing large companies and supporting new ones is conducive to the prosperity of the tech industry and to innovation and entrepreneurship; on the other hand, his advocacy of deregulation without analysis and indulgence in free communication also poses hidden risks to the world.

In the case of the risks posed by AI, for example, the world is indeed a little too free now, but the self-censorship of big companies has indeed gone even further. The Trump administration's choices over the next four years will give the world a chance to rethink its policies on the Internet and tech development. The development of AI technology is pushing the tech industry to concentrate on the giants, and along with that, people's minds are also being controlled by the tech giants, and looking at what the short videos and self-publishing platforms around us are doing, we should look forward to what the new chairman of the FCC is going to do.

The FCC has five commissioners, all appointed by the President and approved by the Senate, and the President also has the power to appoint the FCC Chairman. up to three of the five commissioners are from a single political party.
