Tech in Asia reports that several European and American data center operators have increased their investments in Thailand. Details are as follows:
European data center service provider Etix Everywhere invested 1 billion baht (about 200 million yuan) to build its Bangkok data center. This comes just after the company acquired a 33% stake in Interlink Telecom Bangkok. Further earlier they also acquired a 67% stake in Genesis Data Center in January 2022.
Thailand's Board of Investment recently approved two data center construction plans in Thailand's Chonburi province, with a total investment worth 60 billion baht, or 12 billion yuan. Quartz Computing, a subsidiary of Google's parent company Alphabet, plans to invest 32.76 billion baht in a new data center, and Digitalland, in conjunction with China's GDS, is also investing 28 billion baht in a data center in Chonburi.
In November 2023, the Thai government and Google Inc. signed an agreement to jointly develop Thailand's digital infrastructure and promote AI. This investment is also part of Google's efforts to further increase arithmetic power.
Equinix, a third-party data center operator, recently announced that it will invest $500 million in building data centers in Thailand over the next ten years, and these investments include $34 million in land acquisitions in Bangkok.Equinix's plans respond to the Thai government's cloud-first growth strategy. They plan to build two international business exchanges in Thailand that will provide 3,375 cabinets when fully completed.
Edgnex Data Center Company, a subsidiary of Dubai's Damac Group, has the opportunity to invest $1 billion in building data centers in Thailand. They will invest 32 billion baht in three to four data centers in partnership with the local Proen Group in Thailand, with the first project located in Bangkok and scheduled to be operational in March next year, with a planned initial capacity of 5 megawatts (MW) and future growth to 20 MW.
