Established in 1916, the Optical Society is the most authoritative international academic organization in the field of optics. In addition to optics and photonics, it provides high - level professional services for experts and scholars in many fields, including physics, biology, medicine, electrical engineering, communications, astronomy, meteorology, materials science, mechanical engineering, and computing. The title of OSA Fellow is an extremely high academic honor in the field of optics. The selection process is very strict. Only those who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of optics and photonics ("served with distinction in the advancement of optics and photonics") can be elected as Fellows.

Optical communication, as the core technology for information transmission, plays an extremely important role in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).
