Nokia and Google Fiber first to trial 50G PON speeds on real-time fiber broadband network in the U.S.

Nokia announced that GFiber Labs has successfully tested 50Gb/s broadband speeds over its existing fiber network. This is the first live network demonstration of 50G PON technology in the U.S. and shows how operators can easily use Nokia's Lightspan MF Fiber Access Platform to upgrade their fiber networks to meet the growing demand for faster, more reliable connections. The trial builds on the 25G PON deployment that GFiber Labs announced with Nokia last year and shows how different PON technologies can be combined on the same fiber to grow their broadband offerings.

 

Fiber is a future-proof, energy-efficient technology that is increasingly being used to connect everything to high-speed Internet services. Today, operators around the world are using fiber to create new opportunities for 25G PON services. When higher speeds are needed, operators can upgrade to 50G PON or even higher. Nokia is the only vendor that can support all next-generation PON options, with 10G and 25G products currently available, 50G products in trials, and 100G PON as a technology demonstration.

 

With Nokia's Lightspan Fiber Access Platform, operators can choose the PON solution that best meets a specific use case or business need. The 50G PON trial with Nokia demonstrates how Google Fiber sees the future and what is needed for new broadband services that foster innovation and growth. Using Nokia's fiber solutions, Google Fiber was able to run both 10/25G PON and 25/50G PON broadband services on its fiber network. This demonstrates the network flexibility and scalability it can offer to keep up with the growing demand for gigabit services in the future. Google Fiber is already at the forefront of the gigabit evolution, launching the first commercial 25G PON services in 2023 in partnership with Nokia.
